Privacy Policy

Principles

First, a non-legalese summary of our principles:

  • We will not sell your data. Fairmind.org is nonprofit and provided as a public service. We have no business interest in your data.

  • We want you to be anonymous. Unless you have reason to log in or give us information about yourself, our goal is to keep you anonymous. You can use Fairmind.org’s fairminds and read its content without being asked for personal information. And when we automatically receive technical information, such as your IP address, our policy is to remove it, obscure it, or otherwise ignore it.

  • Your choices on a fairmind are disconnected from your identity. We are not keeping a profile of you and your choices. We don’t want to know.

  • If you provide personal information for a specific reason, we will only use it for that reason. For example, if you provide your email address in the “Contact Us” form, we will only use it to respond to you.

  • If you are a Fairmind.org author or administrator, your actions in that capacity are part of a fairmind’s history. Your edits and other actions will have your username associated with them and be visible to other users. The purpose is to have you be accountable for what you create or change.

That was an informal summary. For the actual terms, see below.

Legal Terms

Fairmind.org has established this Privacy Policy to explain what information we collect, how it is used, how it is protected, and how you can request its deletion. By using Fairmind.org, you agree to the collection and use of information in accordance with this Privacy Policy.

  • Device means any device that can access Our Service such as a computer, a mobile phone or a digital tablet.

  • Fairmind.org (also referred to as “We,” “Us,” or “Our” in this Agreement) refers to the entity operating Fairmind.org.

Collecting and Using Your Personal Data

Types of Data Collected

Personal Data

While using Our Service, We may ask You to provide Us with certain personally identifiable information that can be used to contact or identify You—for example, your email address and your name.

Usage Data

Usage Data is collected automatically when using Our Service. It may include information such as Your Device’s Internet Protocol address (IP address), browser type, browser version, the pages of Our Service that You visit, the time and date of Your visit, the time spent on those pages, device identifiers, and other diagnostic data.

Cookies

We use Cookies and related tracking technologies to store certain information and track the activity on Our Service. Tracking technologies are tags and scripts to collect information that lets us monitor, analyze, and improve Our Service. The technologies We use may include:

  • Cookies for storing your state. As you interact with Our Service, your “state” comprises things like whether you are logged in, whether you have seen certain one-time notifications, and so on. When it is necessary to track such state on our servers, we use cookies to convey the data from You to Us as part your Web browser’s requests to Us. In your browser, there are settings to restrict cookies. Doing so may reduce the functionality of Our Service.

  • Cookies and scripts for monitoring and analytics. We track the activity on Our Service to monitor system health, to analyze usage patterns, and to test new designs. We use Service Providers to enable this tracking. We include scripts on our webpages that allow our Service Providers to collect and process data on our behalf. They do so in accordance with strict privacy standards and only in support of our purposes just mentioned.

Local Storage

When you make choices on decision factors in a fairmind, we store them in your web browser’s “Local Storage,” a standard feature that lets web pages securely store and retrieve data locally on your Device. Unlike Cookies, Local Storage data stays on your Device; it is not sent to our servers. You can disable Local Storage in your browser, but this will prevent Our Service from correctly handling your choices.

Use of Your Personal Data

We may use Personal Data for the following purposes:

  • To provide and maintain Our Service, including to monitor the usage of Our Service.

  • To manage Your Account. The Personal Data You provide can give You access to different functionalities of Our Service available to registered users.

  • To contact You in response to a request from You or, if applicable, as part of your role as an author or administrator on Our Service.

  • For other purposes. We may use Your information for other purposes, such as data analysis, identifying usage trends, and determining the effectiveness of our communications and user experience.

We may share Your personal information in the following situations:

  • With Service Providers to monitor and analyze the use of Our Service or to contact You.

  • For business transfers in connection with significant organizational changes, such as merging with another nonprofit project or restructuring our operations.

  • With Your consent, such as if you provide information for a public profile page on Our Service.

Retention of Your Personal Data

We will retain Your Personal Data as long as necessary for the purposes set out in this Privacy Policy. We will retain and use Your Personal Data to the extent necessary to comply with our legal obligations (for example, if we are required to retain your data to comply with applicable laws), resolve disputes, and enforce our legal agreements and policies.

We will also retain Usage Data for internal analysis purposes. We will retain detailed Usage Data for limited periods of time, typically weeks or months. We will retain aggregated usage data (the totals across users’ activities, such as by day or page) for longer periods.

Transfer of Your Personal Data

Your information, including Personal Data, is processed at Fairmind.org’s main data center in San Francisco, CA, and in any other places where Service Providers involved in the processing are located. This means that your information may be transferred to—and maintained on—computers located outside of Your state, province, country or other governmental jurisdiction where the data protection laws may differ than those from Your jurisdiction.

Your consent to this Privacy Policy followed by Your submission of such information represents Your agreement to that transfer.

We will take all steps reasonably necessary to ensure Your data is treated securely and in accordance with this Privacy Policy. No transfer of Your Personal Data will take place to a Service Provider unless there are adequate controls in place, including for the security of Your data and other personal information.

Delete Your Personal Data

You have the right to delete or request that We assist in deleting the Personal Data that We have collected about You. Our Service may give You the ability to delete certain information about You from within Our Service. You may also contact us to that effect.

If you are an author or administrator on Our Service, deleting your Personal Data may mean that we replace your username with a token like ”Deleted User” so that the integrity of a fairmind’s history is maintained. Also, we may need to retain certain information when we have a legal obligation or lawful basis to do so.

Disclosure of Your Personal Data

Business Transactions

If We have a major organizational change, such as merging with another nonprofit project, Your Personal Data may be transferred. We will provide notice before Your Personal Data is transferred and becomes subject to a different Privacy Policy.

Law enforcement

Under certain circumstances, We may be required to disclose Your Personal Data by law or in response to valid requests by public authorities such as a court or a government agency.

Other legal requirements

We may disclose Your Personal Data in the good faith belief that such action is necessary to:

  • Comply with a legal obligation
  • Protect and defend the rights or property of Fairmind.org
  • Prevent or investigate possible wrongdoing in connection with Our Service
  • Protect the personal safety of Users of Our Service or the public
  • Protect against legal liability

Security of Your Personal Data

We and Our Service Providers use widely accepted means to protect Your Personal Data—for example, by requiring encrypted transfer of website-interaction data between You and Us and Service Providers. However, We cannot guarantee absolute security.

Children’s Privacy

We do not knowingly collect personally identifiable information from children under the age of 13 without obtaining parental consent. If you are a parent or guardian and believe that your child has provided us with Personal Data without your consent, please contact us to address these concerns. We commit to cooperating with you to protect your child’s privacy and comply with relevant laws.

Links to Other Websites

Our Service contains links to other websites that are not operated by Us. If You click on a third party link, You will be directed to that third party’s site, which has its own Privacy Policy. We have no control over and assume no responsibility for the content, privacy policies or practices of any third party sites or services.

Changes to this Privacy Policy

We may update Our Privacy Policy from time to time, which will be reflected on this page. For users that have given us an email address have not opted-out of such messages, We will let You know via email of significant changes to this Privacy Policy.
